Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that has been practiced around the world for centuries. It involves inserting needles into the skin to balance the individual’s energy, which flows through the body on pathways known as “meridians.” When your energy is balanced, it can improve your health and wellbeing. It has also been said to cure many ailments, like headaches and high blood pressure. In general, acupuncture in Miami Beach is safe, but not everyone is a candidate. If you are considering this technique, contact the professionals at Miami Beach Comprehensive Wellness Center. Our medicine is grounded in science and art, which helps us create a fully integrated treatment plan for our patients.
Improves Muscle and Joint Pain
Is your muscle and joint pain impairing your mobility, making everyday tasks difficult to complete? Inflammation is a common culprit of joint pain, which can be reduced with acupuncture. Another way this ancient practice alleviates pain and discomfort in the muscles and joints is through re-oxygenation injury. When the needle is inserted into the skin, it creates a small injury. The body must then quickly work to repair itself, setting off a reaction that increases endorphins and relieves pain. The small injury created by the needle is not considered painful and some even find it relaxing.
Improves Range of Motion
Would you believe it if we told you that desk jobs are dangerous? Well, they are, in many ways. Limiting your range of motion is one such way. When individuals sit at their desks, slumped over their computers, this can lead to muscle discomfort and restriction. You may not know the damage it is causing until you have tried this ancient technique, which boosts your circulation and release endorphins. Endorphins can decrease pain, but they also help the muscles to relax.
Heals Sports Injuries
Rest and relaxation may be the best cure after you have sustained a sports injury, but it isn’t the fastest. This ancient practice can work quicker by speeding up the body’s natural healing ability. We completely support R&R and do not recommend that you do acupuncture as a means of getting back in the game faster. Instead, use it to provide pain relief while you rest.
Helps Athletes Train
Every athlete knows the rigors of training. Yet it is a necessity to get better and stay in shape. We recommend seeing us directly after your workout to help speed up your body’s natural ability to heal. This, along with the necessary rest, can enhance your performance.
Treats Lower Back Pain
Suffering from lower back pain can leave you feeling like an invalid. To help mitigate pain, you may turn to OTC medication more than you like. When that doesn’t work, many people ask their doctors for stronger medication. This is a dark road that we don’t advise going down. We recommend Chinese medicine instead. By releasing chemicals found in the body that act similarly to opioids (i.e., morphine), this technique is a safer, possibly more effective solution for lower back pain. Even better, it has few to no side effects. You should only expect some soreness, and minimal bleeding and bruising where the needle was inserted.
Is Acupuncture Right for You?
This practice is safe, but not right for everyone. We do not recommend it for people who have bleeding disorders, as it will increase your risk of bleeding and bruising. Don’t do it if you are pregnant, as it may lead to premature delivery. Individuals who have a pacemaker should avoid electroacupuncture, as it involves an electric current passing through the acupuncture needles. Speak to a certified physician to find out if you are a candidate.
After you are given the green light, it is important that you work with a reputable professional, like Emily Rowe (MD, AP, IFMCP) and Christopher Estes (MD, MPH, FACOG, IFMCP) of Miami Beach Comprehensive Wellness Center. Working with a well-known professional will reduce possible complications, such as needle sterility. No matter what you see, you should always know that the needle being used is sterile, so don’t be afraid to ask.
