What is IASIS and how might it help my health?

The IASIS Microcurrent Neurobiofeedback machine is a proprietary technology which supports the brainwaves to become quieter at rest and to be more flexible in their functioning at work. We started offering these sessions because so many of our clients are struggling with neurocognitive health and autonomic dysfunction. IASIS Microcurrent Neurobiofeedback sessions may help to rebalance the autonomic nervous system by helping your brain reenter a state of relaxation.

The autonomic nervous system is a component of the peripheral nervous system which relates to any function your body controls automatically, without conscious control. For example, you don’t need to stop and consciously think about adjusting your blood pressure when you run. Your autonomic nervous system automatically adjusts your blood pressure and heart rate, depending upon what type of cardiac output your body needs. The autonomic nervous system affects a variety of physiological processes including: blood pressure, respiration rate, breathing capacity, heart rate, vasoconstriction, blood glucose regulation, hormonal balance, digestion, elimination (bladder and bowel function), sweating,  temperature regulation, pupillary function (light sensitivity) sexual arousal and ability to achieve an orgasm.

The autonomic nervous system is classically thought of as having two major branches: sympathetic (flight or fight) and parasympathetic (rest to digest). Imbalances of the autonomic nervous system are common and vary in a spectrum of severity, from mild to severe. Experiencing indigestion due to stress is a common example of an autonomic nervous issue. Because of stress, you can be stuck in a sympathetic/flight or fight response with an inability to properly digest and eliminate food. This can lead to abdominal discomfort, bloating, gastroparesis, constipation or diarrhea.

When stress hits us for prolonged periods of time, we can get stuck in sympathetic (flight or fight) responses with difficulty entering a parasympathetic state of relaxation, healthy digestion and restoration. This is a physiological response, which is biologically ingrained in all humans. It is how we are all wired. Unfortunately, this can lead to a variety of health issues. IASIS Microcurrent Neurobiofeedback sessions can help you enter into a parasympathetic relaxation state. It is an FDA-approved device for relaxation. The autonomic nervous system is classically thought of as having two major branches: sympathetic (flight, fight or freeze) and parasympathetic (rest to digest). Recent theories of the autonomic nervous system include a third component to the sympathetic response, which is a freeze response. This freeze response is similar to a very frightened animal laying down and playing dead. So, we can call the sympathetic response a flight, fight or freeze response. For example, in severe chronic fatigue syndrome, the body feels unsafe (often due to a combination of chronic infections, elevated toxic burdens and emotional stress), which generates the third sympathetic pattern of a hibernation-like freeze response. Another common example of an autonomic nervous system imbalance is experiencing indigestion due to stress.

How does IASIS work?

An IASIS Microcurrent Neurobiofeedback session involves measuring and recording electrical signals from the scalp, which is similar to an Electroencephalogram (EEG) of the brain. However, these measured brainwaves are not used diagnostically, like a typical EEG. Instead, IASIS uses the frequencies of the measured electrical signals to guide the speed of a feedback signal. The counterbalancing feedback signals are then sent to the brain. Thus, the treatment is specifically designed for your brainwaves on that particular day, in response to what is being detected from your brain. This counterbalancing signal bathes the brain in a healthy signal to stimulate your brain to heal itself, helping you enter a state of relaxation.

The strength of the electromagnetic treatment signals are extremely small and cannot be physically felt. The IASIS machines generates less than three trillionths of a watt or 3 picowatts. It is only ‘on’ for a few seconds during each session. A cellular telephone generates a signal that is more than one-million times stronger that the IASIS signal.

What are the potential benefits of IASIS?

Benefits of IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback may include:

  • Mental clarity
  • Improved energy
  • More restful sleep and normalization of the circadian rhythm
  • Motivation to accomplish tasks
  • Improved focus and memory
  • Stabilization of mood
  • Ability to handle day-to-day stress with less irritability
  • Stabilization of neurological symptoms

IASIS Microcurrent Neurobiofeedback is FDA-approved as a relaxation device. It is not FDA-approved to treat or cure any diseases or medical conditions. This does not mean that the IASIS microcurrent neurofeedback sessions do not work, merely that they have not gone through the FDA approval process. The statements made regarding this device have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. The efficacy of this device has not been confirmed by FDA-approved research. The use of IASIS microcurrent neurofeedback sessions are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

IASIS microcurrent neurofeedback sessions have been used with over 75,000 patients. Though, not FDA-approved, IASIS microcurrent neurofeedback sessions may improve the symptoms associated with the following issues:

  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Anxiety
  • Hypervigilance
  • Hypervigilance
  • Deep sadness
  • Episodes of anger, rage
  • Physical and mental restlessness
  • Irregular sleep patterns
  • Obsessions and compulsions
  • Brain injury
  • Spasticity

How often and how many IASIS sessions should I do?shutterstock_1511983844

Most people respond best to a series of 10 sessions over a space of about 5 weeks, with 2 sessions per week. After a series of 10 sessions are completed, we recommend that you reevaluate your response to stress and any physiologic manifestations in the autonomic nervous system. After reevaluating your stress response and the state of your autonomic function with your healthcare provider, you can decide whether to continue sessions at the same frequency, decrease frequency or stop the sessions. There are no set amounts of recommended IASIS microcurrent neurofeedback sessions. The strength, frequency and time of the IASIS microcurrent neurofeedback sessions are based upon the clinical judgment of the trained healthcare providers at MBCWC. Results vary from patient to patient. Each individual is unique and your results might differ from another person’s results.
